Gelao
仡佬族. An ancient Guizhou people considered by some scholars to be descendants of the historical Liao and Yelang peoples, the Gelao maintain a rooster-centred worship tradition and distinctive stone-drilling craft.
About this people
The Gelao are one of Guizhou's smaller officially recognised ethnic groups, with most of their population in Wuchuan Gelao and Miao Autonomous County in northern Guizhou and scattered communities in Zunyi Prefecture, Anshun, and parts of Yunnan and Guangxi. Their language belongs to the Kra branch of the Tai-Kadai family — making it one of the most divergent members of that family — and many Gelao today are fully Chinese-speaking, with the Gelao language spoken only by a minority of elders.
The Gelao have a long history in the Guizhou region: some historians associate them with the ancient Yelang kingdom mentioned in Chinese historical records, though this connection is debated. Their traditional way of life combined terrace farming of rice, millet, and corn with craft production in the rocky upland areas of northern Guizhou.
The most distinctive Gelao ritual practice centres on the rooster (cockerel): the Sacrifice to the Rooster (Ji Ji) ceremony is a major event in which a communal sacrifice is made to the ancestor spirit, with the rooster as the primary offering and its entrails read for divination. Gelao stone drilling — producing intricate holes and channels in stone through a slow rotary process — was a traditional craft associated with ceremonial objects. Gelao women's clothing uses embroidery with geometric and animal motifs. The community has been subject to significant assimilation with Han and other minority populations.
