Ewenki

鄂温克族. A Tungusic reindeer-herding and cattle-raising people of the Hulunbuir grasslands and taiga who are closely related to the Evenk of Siberia.

About this people

The Ewenki of China are closely related to the Evenk people of Russia and share the same Tungusic language family. They live primarily in the Ewenki Autonomous Banner in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, with additional communities in Heilongjiang. The Ewenki are internally diverse: some groups practised reindeer herding in the northern taiga (a group sometimes called the Aoluguya Ewenki), others raised cattle and horses on the open steppe, and some were forest hunters and fishers.

The reindeer-herding Ewenki of the Aoluguya area near Genhe in Inner Mongolia are particularly distinctive. They herd small numbers of forest reindeer (used for transport and for antler harvest rather than meat), live in portable chum tents, and follow a semi-nomadic cycle through the forest. This community attracted significant attention for their unusual subsistence pattern, which resembles Sami or Nenets practices far to the north in Siberia.

The Ewenki language is endangered, with most speakers in China also fluent in Mongolian and Chinese. Shamanic practice historically addressed relations with forest spirits, illness, and hunting success. Among some Ewenki groups in Heilongjiang, Eastern Orthodox Christianity spread through contact with Russian settlers in the 19th century and persists as an influence. Embroidery, birch-bark craft, and leather work are important material arts. The Naadam-style horse racing and wrestling festivals of the steppe Ewenki merge with Mongolian cultural practice in the Hulunbuir area.
