Dong
侗族. The builders of China's covered rain-and-wind bridges and drum towers, the Dong are a Kam-Sui-speaking people of the Guizhou-Hunan-Guangxi border mountains whose polyphonic choral singing (Kam Grand Choir) is recognised by UNESCO.
About this people
The Dong people — also called Kam in their own language — are concentrated in the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of southeastern Guizhou, with communities in neighbouring Hunan (Tongdao Dong Autonomous County) and Guangxi (Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County). Their language belongs to the Kam-Sui branch of the Tai-Kadai family, distinct from the more widely spoken Tai languages.
The Dong are celebrated for two architectural traditions. First, their covered timber-frame bridges — called Wind-and-Rain Bridges (Fengyu Qiao) — span river crossings with sheltered walkways supported on stone piers, often featuring elaborate multi-tiered towers at the bridge entrance. The Chengyang Wind-and-Rain Bridge in Sanjiang County, Guangxi, is the most famous example. Second, their Drum Towers (Gulou) — multi-storey timber-frame pagoda-like structures with many tiers of eaves — serve as communal meeting halls, ceremonial spaces, and social centres in every Dong village. No nails are used in traditional Dong timber construction.
The Dong Grand Choir (Kuan, or Gah Laox) is an ancient choral singing tradition in which multiple voice parts sing interlocking melodies without a conductor, creating a complex polyphonic texture. UNESCO recognised the Dong Grand Choir as intangible cultural heritage in 2009. Villages have competitive choir groups that perform at festivals. Dong cuisine features sour fermented flavours: sour fish (pickled raw fish in rice wine and chillis), sour duck, and sour vegetables are communal preparations stored in ceramic jars and shared at festivals.
