Bonan

保安族. A small Mongolic-speaking Muslim group of southern Gansu renowned for their decorative waist-knife craft, one of the most prized bladed traditions in northwest China.

About this people

The Bonan people live primarily in Jishishan Bonan Dongxiang and Salar Autonomous County in the Linxia area of southern Gansu, with a smaller community near Tongren in Qinghai. Like the Dongxiang, they descend from Mongol soldiers and officials who converted to Islam and merged with Tibetan and Han populations during the Yuan and Ming dynasties. The Bonan language belongs to the Mongolic family and shows influences from Tibetan and Chinese.

The community is small — around 20,000 people — and its cultural distinctiveness is most visible in one craft: the Bonan waist knife (Baoan dao). These knives have elaborately decorated handles assembled from layers of bone, horn, copper, and brass in geometric and floral patterns, and sheaths of inlaid metalwork. They are among the most decorated and technically accomplished small blades in Chinese craft tradition and are sought by collectors across the country. The craft is passed within families of specialist smiths and handle-decorators.

Islamic observance shapes daily life: mosque architecture in the Bonan villages combines Chinese roofline conventions with Arabic geometric decoration. Bonan women's embroidery uses floral and vine motifs. Cuisine follows halal practice with wheat noodles, flatbreads, and lamb as staples. The Bonan trace their origin to the area of Tongren in Qinghai, where they lived near Tibetan Buddhist monasteries before migrating to Gansu in the 19th century, and some Tibetan cultural memory is preserved in song and oral tradition.
