Achang
阿昌族. A small Tibeto-Burman people of western Yunnan's Dehong plain, noted for producing the Husa knife — a hand-forged blade of outstanding quality — and for their Theravada Buddhist religious tradition shared with Dai neighbours.
About this people
The Achang — sometimes also romanised as Ngochang — live in the Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in western Yunnan, primarily in Longchuan and Lianghe counties on the fertile plain between the Longchuan River and the Burmese border. Their population is small, around 39,000 people, and they are closely related linguistically to the Burmese of Myanmar — both Achang and Burmese belong to the Sal sub-group of the Tibeto-Burman branch.
The Achang have been settled rice farmers on the Dehong plain for at least several centuries, and through close contact with the Dai (who also practise Theravada Buddhism) they adopted the Theravada Buddhist tradition, temple festivals, and monastic education system. Achang villages have monastery temples (hor) maintained by the community, and monks study Pali scripture alongside Chinese and local education.
The Achang are most widely known for the Husa knife (Husa dao), a hand-forged blade produced in the Husa township of Longchuan County. Husa knives are renowned for the quality of their steel — historically produced by smelting techniques that created a flexible yet hard blade — and for their decorative handles and sheaths. The craft is passed within specialist families and the knives are traded throughout the region. Traditional Achang dress features dark indigo clothing with silver clasps and embroidered details; women wear pleated skirts and elaborate headdresses at festivals.
