Shinan District (Modern City Centre)

Shinan is Qingdao's historical commercial district — the Republican-era Chinese-administered counterpart to the German concession's residential old town. Zhongshan Road, the principal commercial spine, runs north-south through the district and was the most prestigious retail street in pre-1949 Qingdao.

Tsingtao Beer Street, on the southern edge of the Old Town overlapping with Shinan, is a substantial concentration of seafood-and-beer pairing restaurants — the canonical Qingdao dining experience. The street is heavily touristed but the food culture remains substantively local; Qingdao residents continue to use it (typically choosing the smaller and quieter side-alley restaurants over the main-street venues).

The Qingdao Olympic Convention Centre, on the eastern flank of Shinan along the coast, was built for the 2018 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit and now hosts substantial international conference and convention business.

Hai Bo Lan Square, on the northern Shinan coast, contains the Qingdao Port and Customs Museum and the city's principal cruise-ship terminal. International cruise vessels (Royal Caribbean, Costa, Princess) call regularly, with passengers fanning out to the Old Town and Badaguan.

Shinan's character bridges the Republican-era heritage of the Old Town and the modern coastal-resort character of Shilaoren. For visitors looking for a single-base location to access both halves of Qingdao, Shinan offers the best transit connectivity.
