Huangdao (West Coast)
黄岛 · Qingdao's western coast across Jiaozhou Bay — the Qingdao West Coast New Area, substantial petrochemical and logistics infrastructure, the Jinshatan beach, and the new Sino-German Eco-Park development.
About this neighbourhood
Huangdao is the western district of Qingdao, separated from the mainland Qingdao city by Jiaozhou Bay. The 2011 Jiaozhou Bay Bridge — at 41.6 kilometres, the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world at completion — was the first major infrastructure connection. The 2014 Qingdao Bay Tunnel and the 2018 Jiaozhou Bay Subsea Metro Tunnel (Metro Line 1) added rail and additional road connections.
The West Coast New Area, designated a national-level new district in 2014, has been the principal growth zone for Qingdao over the past decade. The Sino-German Ecopark, a Sino-German joint development, is the high-tech-and-clean-energy industrial cluster — substantial Mercedes-Benz and Bosch operations are here.
Jinshatan ("Golden Sand Beach") is China's longest natural sand beach — 3.5 kilometres of fine sand on the western flank of Huangdao. The beach is substantially less crowded than Qingdao's central Number One through Number Six bathing beaches and is the preferred summer-weekend escape for residents of the West Coast New Area.
The Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO), opened 2021, replaced the older Qingdao Liuting Airport on the eastern Qingdao mainland. TAO sits on the western coast north of Huangdao and is the city's primary international gateway. The Metro Line 8 connects TAO to central Qingdao in roughly 35 minutes.
