QINGDAO · FOOD GUIDE
Eating in Qingdao
Qingdao's food identity is inseparable from the sea. The city's German colonial history (1898–1914) contributed a beer-brewing tradition that transformed into Asia's largest beer festival, but the daily food culture is about fresh seafood bought at morning markets and cooked simply — steamed, boiled, or stir-fried with ginger and spring onion.
蛤蜊
Steamed Clams
Small clams steamed open and served with garlic-ginger dipping sauce; Qingdao clams from the Yellow Sea are particularly sweet.
Where to try: Seafood stalls at Qingdao No.1 Bathing Beach market; Dengzhou Road beer street vendors.
鱿鱼
Grilled Squid
Fresh squid scored and grilled with cumin, chilli, and salt; sold by skewer or whole from charcoal carts near the beaches.
Where to try: Seafood vendor carts near Zhanqiao Pier and along Taiping Road beach.
葱烧海参
Sea Cucumber with Scallion
Braised sea cucumber in a rich soy and spring onion sauce; a Shandong-style premium dish.
Where to try: Established seafood restaurants in Shinan district; Qingdao restaurant hotels along the seafront.
梭子蟹配青岛啤酒
Hairy Crab and Beer Pairing
Boiled swimming crab paired with draft Tsingtao from a plastic bag (the Qingdao street-beer tradition).
Where to try: Seafood restaurants near Pichaiyuan (劈柴院) food lane; any local seafood stall from July to October.
胶州红烧鱼
Jiazhou Braised Fish
Small whole fish braised in a soy and ginger sauce until the bones are soft; a Jiaodong (Qingdao region) home cooking staple.
Where to try: Local Shandong-cuisine restaurants in Licang and Laoshan districts.

The morning seafood market (海鲜市场) along Tuan Island Road and at the fishing harbour in Chengyang opens before 07:00 when boats bring in the day's catch — vendors sell live clams, crabs, and urchin that can be taken to adjacent restaurants for cooking. Pichaiyuan (劈柴院) food lane in the old German colonial district is an evening street food destination with seafood, Tsingtao beer, and Shandong-style stalls.
