QINGDAO · ARRIVAL GUIDE
Arriving in Qingdao
Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (TAO), opened in 2021, replaced the old Liuting Airport and is 40km east of the city centre. It is well connected by metro and handles domestic routes plus some regional international services to South Korea and Japan.
Airport to hotel
From TAO (Jiaodong): Metro Line 8 runs to Qingdao North Station in about 40 minutes (¥20–30); change to Lines 3/11 for the city centre and coastal area. Taxis from TAO cost ¥120–180 to central Qingdao depending on traffic. Didi operates from the designated pickup area. From Qingdao Station (city centre): walkable to the old German district and coastal hotels.
SIM & connectivity
China Mobile and Unicom tourist SIMs are available at TAO arrivals. Qingdao is a popular destination for Korean and Japanese visitors, so airport signage and some hotel staff have trilingual capability. Standard VPN requirements apply.
Mobile payments
Alipay and WeChat Pay are standard throughout Qingdao including at the Tsingtao Beer Museum ticket office and beach market stalls. The metro accepts both apps and contactless bank cards. Foreign card linking via Alipay International is reliable.
Currency & ATMs
ATMs at Bank of China and ICBC branches in Shinan and Shibei districts accept foreign cards. Cash is useful for beach market vendors and smaller seafood stalls. Keep ¥300–400 on hand for morning markets and independent vendors.
Managing jet lag
Qingdao is UTC+8. The morning seafood markets near the fishing harbour are open from before 06:00 — one of the most interesting early-morning activities in the city and useful for jet-lagged early risers.
English support & contacts
Hotels in the coastal Shinan district and around Zhongshan Road have English-capable staff. The German colonial district has well-positioned English signage. Qingdao's growing Korean and Japanese tourism sector means hotel staff across the city are more accustomed to non-Mandarin speakers than in many comparable Chinese coastal cities. In emergencies, dial 120 for ambulance; Qingdao Municipal Hospital has an international patient centre.
