Zhenhai Coast

Zhenhai — "Subdue the Sea" — was Ningbo's outer coastal-defence position, the garrison town controlling the mouth of the Yong River and the approach to the main city. The Zhenhai Fort system, built and reinforced from the Ming through the late Qing, was the site of one of the most studied Chinese military successes of the 19th century: the defence against the French naval squadron during the Sino-French War of 1884-85.

The French Yunnan Campaign had pressured Qing military commanders into a series of retreats; the Zhenhai defence was different. Commander Ou Yangli, using a combination of underwater mines, improved Krupp artillery on the fort emplacements, and a defensive chain across the river mouth, repelled the French fleet under Rear Admiral Lespès on 1 March 1885. The engagement is commemorated at the fort site and in the Zhenhai History Museum, with a substantive collection of the original Krupp guns and a recovered French torpedo.

The fort system visible today is a mix of original Qing-period masonry and Republican-era reinforcement, set on a series of low promontories overlooking the river mouth and the outer bay. The views from the gun emplacements across the Hangzhou Bay approach are clear on fine days.

Zhenhai today is the location of one of China's major petrochemical complexes — the Zhenhai Refining and Chemical base, part of Sinopec, is visible along the northern coastal approaches. The juxtaposition of Qing-era coastal fortification and 21st-century refinery infrastructure is a particularly direct illustration of Chinese economic transformation.
