Dongqian Lake

Dongqian Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in Zhejiang province — 20 square kilometres of open water, surrounded by low forested hills and the remnant fishing villages that sustained the lake's traditional economy for centuries. The lake is close enough to Ningbo's urban core (about 20 kilometres) to function as both a day-trip destination and an emerging resort zone, with a concentration of international hotels on the southern shore.

The Song-dynasty Stone-Carving Trail on the hills above the western shore is the most historically significant element of the Dongqian area. The trail passes dozens of stone memorial sculptures — carved animals (stone horses, tigers, sheep), officials in ceremonial robes, and abstract guardian figures — that formed the ceremonial approaches to Song-dynasty tombs on the hillside. The sculptures date primarily from the 11th and 12th centuries and represent a provincial survival of Chinese imperial burial-monument sculpture comparable in quality to more famous examples at imperial tombs near Nanjing.

The traditional fishing villages on the north and east shores — Shaoshu, Yunlong, Moshan — have been substantially preserved as heritage destinations while losing most of their working fishing populations. The village architecture (whitewash-and-grey-tile Zhejiang-style houses) and canal infrastructure give a reasonable impression of the lakeside village character of the pre-resort period.

The Ningbo Ecological Corridor wetland area, on the lake's western edge, provides managed wetland habitat for waterbirds and a boardwalk observation network.
