Beilun Port District

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is consistently among the busiest container ports in the world by throughput volume — surpassing Shanghai in some annual rankings for total cargo tonnage. Beilun, on the southern shore of Hangzhou Bay, is the primary container-terminal zone of this vast port system, with the main deep-water berths, container-stacking yards, and ship-loading cranes clustered along a stretch of reclaimed coastline.

The port handles bulk commodities (iron ore from Australia and Brazil destined for Baosteel in Shanghai; coal; grain), liquid bulk (petrochemicals and crude oil for the Zhenhai refinery and the Zhoushan oil-storage terminal), and manufactured exports (vehicles from the Ningbo automotive cluster, electronics, machinery). The vessel movements through the Beilun fairway on any given day include bulk carriers of 200,000-300,000 DWT — some of the largest vessels operating in Asian waters.

The Beilun District town centre, set back from the industrial waterfront, is a working-class industrial township with functional commercial streets, seafood restaurants, and the kind of practical infrastructure that serves a port-worker population. It is not a conventional tourist destination but provides a genuine view of the physical reality of global supply-chain infrastructure.

The Beilun Scenic Area, on the low hills behind the port, is a public park that provides elevated views over the container yard and bay — one of the few locations where the full scale of the port infrastructure is visible from a public viewpoint.
