Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao)

Fuzimiao — the Confucius Temple — has been the cultural heart of Nanjing since the Northern Song. The current temple complex was rebuilt in the 1980s after Cultural Revolution damage, but the layout reflects the historical pattern: a central Confucian Temple, the adjacent Jiangnan Examination Hall (the imperial-examination compound that produced more than half of late-Qing senior officials from this single venue), and a surrounding commercial-residential quarter that grew up to serve scholars and families coming for examinations.

The Qinhuai River, running just south of the temple, was the famous pleasure-boat quarter of Ming and Qing Nanjing — the literary culture of late-imperial China is full of references to Qinhuai courtesans, scholar-poet gatherings, and lantern-lit boats. The current river-boat tours offer evening rides past the restored Confucian Temple lantern wall and the Wuyi Lane bridges; the experience is touristic but the architecture and lighting are genuinely atmospheric.

The Imperial Examination Museum, opened in 2017 on the site of the Jiangnan Examination Hall, is the substantive cultural attraction in this district. The hall once held over twenty thousand individual examination cells in twelve cell-blocks; the museum reconstructs a representative cell-block and provides a thorough exhibition on the imperial examination system from Sui through Qing.

The Lantern Festival lantern displays at Fuzimiao are the largest in southern China — a Nanjing tradition since the Ming and now an annual draw of millions of visitors during the fifteen-day festival period.
