LIJIANG · FAMILY TRAVEL
Lijiang with kids
Lijiang is a manageable small city for families — the old town is largely pedestrianised and compact, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car is accessible for children with appropriate warm clothing, and the relaxed pace suits families who want to combine culture with outdoor activity.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Cable Car
Ages 5–16The cable car ascent to 4,506m and the view across glaciers is dramatic for children; the temperature at the summit is 10–15°C colder than the valley even in summer — bring a layer.
Getting there: Minibus from Lijiang to the mountain base; cable car from Yunshan Ping station
Blue Moon Valley
Ages All agesA series of vivid turquoise glacier-melt lakes at the base of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain; easy flat walking and striking colours.
Getting there: Within the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area; electric cart from the entrance
Naxi Cultural Performance (Dongba)
Ages 4–14Evening performances of traditional Naxi music and dance (Naxi Orchestra) in the old town; colourful costumes and ancient instruments engage younger children.
Getting there: Multiple performance venues in the old town; walkable from most guesthouses
Lijiang Old Town Wandering
Ages All agesThe canal-crossed old town with its stone-paved streets is safe for children to explore; the waterwheel at the market entrance and the koi ponds in the gardens are particular draws.
Getting there: On foot from old town accommodation
Horse Trekking (Shuhe or Baisha)
Ages 5–16Short horse rides through the farmland and villages north of the old town; led by Naxi guides; suitable for first-time child riders.
Getting there: Taxi to Shuhe or Baisha village; operators at the village entrance
The Mufu Palace garden adjacent to the Lijiang Mu Family Mansion has open courtyards and a panoramic terrace overlooking the old town; good for photos and movement. The river channels running through the old town form a natural playground for older children. Heilong Tan (Black Dragon Pool) park north of the old town has walking paths and views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected in the pool.
The old town has a wide range of traveller-friendly restaurants along Xinhua Street and Wuyi Street; picture menus are common and staff are accustomed to foreign visitors. Western-style cafes along Renmin Road serve sandwiches, pancakes, and familiar items for young children. Yunnan noodle soups (crossing the bridge noodles) with mild broth are generally accepted by children. Altitude (2,400m) affects appetite — children may eat less than usual for the first day.
