Daoli District (Russian Quarter)

Daoli District was the principal Russian-administered concession in pre-1932 Harbin. The district contains the largest concentration of pre-1914 Russian commercial and residential architecture surviving anywhere outside Russia itself — substantially intact Russian Orthodox churches, Russian-style merchant residences, and the Russian-Polish-Jewish commercial street grid.

Saint Mary's Catholic Church, on Geologic Street, is one of the surviving pre-1949 international religious buildings — a small Romanesque-Revival church built by the Russian-Polish Catholic community. The church is open for visiting and remains in active use.

Daowai (eastern Daoli) was the Republican-era Chinese-administered commercial district, deliberately distinct from the Russian-concession Daoli. The district has a more substantial Chinese-revival commercial character — restored Qing-style courtyard houses, Chinese-revival commercial buildings, and a denser concentration of authentic-feeling alley life. The district has been substantially restored over the past 15 years.

The Daoli Market, on the western flank of the district, is a substantial working market selling Russian-influenced bread, cheeses, sausage, and Harbin-style dried-fish products. The market is a substantive shopping destination for visitors looking for Harbin-specific food souvenirs.

Sino-Russian Friendship Square, on the central Daoli north-south axis, is a substantial public square with Russian-style fountains and a Russian-Chinese friendship monument that has stood since the 1950s.
