HARBIN · ARRIVAL GUIDE
Arriving in Harbin
Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB) is 33km south of the city centre. Winter travel to Harbin requires specific preparation — the city regularly sees temperatures of -20°C to -30°C between December and February, and airport-to-hotel transfers in these conditions require warm clothing accessible from hand luggage rather than checked baggage.
Airport to hotel
From HRB: Metro Line 3 runs to the city centre (Harbin West and Central Avenue area) in about 40 minutes (¥10–20). Taxis from HRB cost ¥80–120 to the city centre but add significant time in winter traffic. In winter, Didi drivers may decline remote or traffic-heavy routes — book in advance or use the hotel shuttle if available. From Harbin West Station (HSR): Metro Lines 1/3 connect the city in 20–30 minutes.
SIM & connectivity
China Mobile and Unicom tourist SIMs are available at HRB arrivals. In winter, cold weather affects phone battery life significantly — a power bank is essential. Standard VPN requirements apply throughout Heilongjiang province.
Mobile payments
Alipay and WeChat Pay are used throughout Harbin including at the Ice Festival venue. However, cold temperatures can cause smartphones to lose charge rapidly outdoors — be prepared to use cash in outdoor market situations when a phone may die.
Currency & ATMs
ATMs at ICBC and Bank of China branches in Daoli and Nangang districts accept foreign cards. Keep ¥500–700 cash in winter for outdoor festival vendors, street food in cold conditions, and any situation where phones lose charge. In sub-zero temperatures, keep cash in an inside pocket to prevent ink on notes freezing.
Managing jet lag
Harbin is UTC+8. In winter, the Ice Festival grounds are open after dark (17:00–21:00) when the illumination is at its best — evening alertness from jet lag actually works well for the main attraction.
English support & contacts
Hotels in the Daoli and Nangang districts have English-speaking front desk staff. The Central Avenue area is the most tourist-oriented and has a higher density of English-capable businesses. Ice Festival staff at the main venues speak basic English. In emergencies, the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University has English-capable international patient services. In extreme winter conditions (-25°C or below), limit outdoor time for children under 10 to 20–30 minutes maximum.
